Ann Thayer Crosset

Dancer - Choreographer - Artistic Leader - Educator

  • A volcano that erupts daily – Through many years of work in the service of dance, Ann Crosset has had a colossal meaning for Danish cultural life.

    Remarks from a colleague
  • Superb educationalist…imparts skills and a positive sense of self image. Everyone came out of her classes with a sense of self worth. Perceptive teacher, choreographer, and open-hearted human being.

    Adrienee Schele
    The Star (Johannesburg)
  • As a choreographer, her explicit movement design and ability to put an artistic frame around the whole performance make people want to work with her again and again. Ann has so much to contribute and the actors simply love working with her! And so do I.

    Ragnar Lyth
Swedish director regarding her work in Molière's Tartuff
  • Ann Crosset is also a sought-after teacher. In Denmark, she contributes to the education of young professionals at the University of Copenhagen, The Danish National Theatre School, The Royal Theatre’s Opera Academy, and the Royal Ballet Schools in Denmark.

  • The brutal honesty of Juilliard-trained Crosset’s neo-modern moves is breathtaking.

Bio

“…With her background in American modern dance as well as classical background Ann Crosset brought Danish Dance a special style of energy, vitality, and fantasy.

Ann Crosset started dancing at the age of age of eight in her hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio, where

she studied the Bournonville and Cechetti ballet methods and at the age of 15 became an apprentice member of Cincinnati`s Contemporary Dance Theater . At the age of 18 she was accepted at the Juilliard School of Performing Arts in New York and as part of her education she took her third year abroad in Denmark, where she was recommended to study with Kirsten Ralov and Fred Bjornssen. The year after she recieved her degree from Juilliard in 1976 she returned to Denmark. In 1980 she met the American dancer, Cher Guertze. This partnership has a strong influence on Crossets career.

In 1980 through 1985 they created Ann Crosset /Cher Geurtze Dance Theater and from 1985 Uppercut Dance Theatre “Jumpshot” 1982, “Childstars”1984 and CARYMARYBURY 1986. As one of the first modern dance companies in Denmark, …their work with professional gymnasts lead to the development of a progressive, unique form of physical expression as well as including public out side the more institutional frames (fx in schools). In the 1980s Uppercut Dance Theatre together with New Danish Dance …was influencial in stimulating the interest for modern dance in Denmark.

Ann Crosset left Uppercut Dance Theatre and moved from 1993-1995 with her family to Los Angeles, where she danced and choreographed for different dance groups and educational institutions…. After .. she moved back to Copenhagen, where she primarily taught for State Theater School, Opera Academy and Ballet School at the Royal Theatre as well as choreographed for theatre ,film , and TV together with among others , instructors, Ina Miriam Rosenbaum and Madeliene Ron Juul. In 1999 Ann Crosset recieved a 3- year State Arts Grant and became a member of the State Theatre Council….”

”Through many years of work in the service of dance, Ann Crosset has had a colossal meaning for Danish cultural life,” opines one reviewer. “A volcano that erupts daily,” remarks a colleague.

“An outstanding performer in solo and in ensemble work, Crosset works within the avant-garde crossover genre. As a collaborator with the prominent South African avant-garde director Robyn Orlin, she created the solo The Future maybe bright but not necessarily orange …. Here, her charisma and humour go through the roof of a bus as it splashes the audience with a deeply original performance. With the Robyn Orlin City Theater Ensemble, she opened the Centre National de la Danse in Paris and the Museum of World Culture in Gothenburg . She has also worked with director Ong Ken Sen in Search: Hamlet at the Kronborg Castle. “

“Superb educationalist…imparts skills and a positive sense of self image. Everyone came out of her classes with a sense of self worth. Perceptive teacher, choreographer, and open-hearted human being.” The Star Adrienee Schele (Johannesburg)

“As a choreographer, her explicit movement design and ability to put an artistic frame around the whole performance make people want to work with her again and again. ” Ann has so much to contribute and the actors simply love working with her! And so do I,” states Swedish director, Ragnar Lyth, of her work in Molière’s Tartuffe “
